Columbia University’s Center on African-American Religion, Sexual Politics and Social Justice (CARSS) in the Institute for Research in African-American Studies invites applications for a nonrenewable one-year postdoctoral research scholar position, to begin July 1, 2021. The position is open to those who have received the Ph.D. within the last three academic years; and candidates must have completed all requirements for the Ph.D. prior to the start of the appointment.
This position is supported by CARSS’s new project, “The Art, Politics and Publics of Black Faith,” as part of a grant from the Henry Luce Foundation. This project deepens CARSS’s work on the intersections of religion, gender and sexuality in the context of African-American life and extends it to the broader role of religion in black life. Accordingly, we invite applications from scholars whose works moves across and brings together the interdisciplinary fields of black studies and the academic study of religion. We are especially interested in applicants drawing on humanistic and social scientific approaches to the study of religion in the African Diaspora. Disciplinary orientation and area of specialization are open.
The successful candidate will be free to pursue an independent research agenda while also having the opportunity to participate in and contribute to a variety of programs associated with the center’s current project, “The Art, Politics, and Publics of Black Faith,” and to take advantage of the wider intellectual life of Columbia University.
This position will carry a salary of $60,000 (plus benefits). The postdoctoral research scholar will also have the opportunity to teach one course during the fellowship year for additional compensation.
